OAKMONT RANCH

Oakmont Ranch not only breeds and races Thoroughbreds we have our own in-house retraining program to turn our retired horses into fabulous sporthorses! Since most of our horse have been bought as yearlings and started and trained here at Oakmont this gives us a unique and wonderful opportunity to restart their second career having known their complete background and history with the continued quality of care and attention they are accustomed to. Our horses once retired go through a "cooldown" or vacation period usually anywhere from three to six months adjusted accordingly to the individual horse. They are then evaluated for suitability into the retraining program, normally geared toward jumpers, to start their second career. Once training starts the horses are taught  basic flatwok, including collection, extension, leg yielding, flying changes and softening and acceptance of the bit. From there we move into phase two and start work with ground poles, crossrails, verticals, oxers. gymnatics and jumping lines through to small courses.  Most of our sale horses have some show experience, weather it's competing on the Southern California "A" circuit or just schooling at one of these venues to prepare them for a life as a future sporhorse. We try to expose our horses to everything that would go on at a normal showbarn and ready them the best we can to make them suitable mounts geared towards the amateur rider. Oakmont horses will be and have competed at "A" shows @ Showpark, San Juan Capistrano, Del Mar, and Thermal and continue to do so throughout 2013.
